I’m covering a way to go beyond traditional online job applications, and land a job faster.

In a hyper-competitive market, there’s only one real way to stand out

Last week, I asked readers if they planned on starting a job search in 2025.

75% said they were, but were worried they may not find a job.

The common sentiment these days seems to be that the job search has become somewhat of a length ordeal.

It used to be the norm that you could slap a few words together on a resume, start applying, and get immediate results within a week.

That’s not the case anymore.

The new norm is a multi-month process that involves applying to hundreds of jobs without so much as a peep.

So how do you tackle a challenge like this?

It’s important to have a strong resume no matter what because at the end of the day, it serves as the first touch point between you and the employer.

But that’s not what I want to talk to you about today.

Trying not to drown in a sea of applicants

Instead, I’m going to talk about how to get ahead.

Because when everyone else is doing the same thing (applying online), putting in even just a little extra effort can help you gain a competitive advantage.

The method, created by career strategist Steve Dalton, is way to land a job faster by focusing your efforts where they really count.

If you've been submitting countless online applications without the results to show for it, this method might be the exact competitive edge you've been looking for.

So, what’s the method called?

It’s called LAMP.

It stands for List, Alumni (or Advocates), Motivation, and Posting.

Instead of passively applying to jobs, you're creating a targeted shortlist of employers, leveraging personal connections, and proactively pursuing opportunities.

It's all about working smarter, not harder.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

List: Start by brainstorming 40+ employers you'd genuinely love to work for. Think big and small—dream companies, interesting startups, or promising organizations in your field.

Alumni (or Advocates): Find out if you know anyone inside those companies (former classmates, colleagues, or friends). An internal advocate significantly boosts your chances of being noticed.

Motivation: Rate your enthusiasm for each employer from 1 (low) to 5 (high). This ensures you're spending energy on jobs that truly excite you.

Posting: Check if the company is currently hiring. Companies actively hiring for relevant roles become priority targets, though don’t immediately dismiss those without postings.

Once you've rated each company, prioritize them: your top targets are high-motivation, have relevant postings, and ideally, offer alumni connections.

Who is LAMP best suited for?

The good news is the LAMP method works for almost everyone. Whether you're a recent graduate, mid-career professional, or seasoned executive, the method gives you a structured plan to navigate the job market efficiently.

If you're in a particularly competitive field—think tech, finance, or consulting—the LAMP method can be an absolute game-changer, providing clarity, structure, and actionable networking steps.

Why use it?

There are clear advantages over traditional online job applications:

You get proactive: Instead of passively waiting, you actively pursue contacts, creating opportunities rather than hoping they'll appear.

It's efficient: By narrowing your list, you spend your time networking with companies most likely to hire someone exactly like you.

Hidden opportunities: Many roles never hit job boards—they're filled through referrals. The LAMP method taps directly into this hidden job market.

Reduced burnout: A structured, systematic approach keeps you motivated and organized, reducing the overwhelm and discouragement that comes from aimless applications.

Step-by-Step: How to apply this method

1. Create Your Initial Target List

Make a quick list of at least 40 companies you'd genuinely want to work for. Don't worry about openings yet—just get inspired!

2. Find Alumni or Advocates

Use LinkedIn or your personal network to see if you have connections at these companies. Mark each company with a "Y" if there's an internal connection or "N" if not.

3. Rank Your Motivation

For each company, rate your excitement from 1-5 (with 5 being your absolute dream company). Trust your gut—you don't need extensive research just yet.

4. Check for Current Openings

Look at job boards or company websites. Assign scores: 3 for perfect-fit openings, 2 for general openings, and 1 if there are no immediate relevant jobs.

5. Prioritize Your List

Sort your list first by motivation, then postings, and finally by alumni connections. Your top 10 are your best bets for quick results.

6. Start Outreach

Begin reaching out to your internal advocates or alumni for informational interviews—casual conversations focused on learning, not directly asking for a job. Keep emails brief, clear, and friendly.

Here's a quick example:

"Hi Sarah, I noticed you're an alum from State University working at Company Z. I'm currently exploring roles in marketing and would love to learn more about your experience there. Would you be open to a quick chat? Thanks so much!"

7. Follow-Up Strategically

After each informational chat, send a thank-you note.

Occasionally reach out afterward to keep the relationship warm—sharing relevant articles or brief updates about your search progress.

To sum up

The LAMP method won't completely replace online applications, but it's a powerful strategy that complements and enhances your job search.

By proactively focusing your efforts, you'll stand out, build valuable connections, and significantly increase your chances of landing a role that excites you.

Stop the endless cycle of applying and praying—and start strategically lighting your own way forward.
