5 AI tools that’ll make your job search a little easier…
While I’m not a fan of the thought that AI could potentially replace humans in certain professions, I recognize its value in completing certain tasks (like job searching).
Since GPT became popular in recent months, it seems like new AI tools are popping up everywhere, so why not take advantage of a few to make your job hunting just a tad easier.
So with that, I’m going to share some of the tools I’ve stumbled across in recent weeks and months. Tools are broken up into 4 categories: resume writing, job searching, career planning, and interview prep. Let’s dive in!
Resume Writing
If you’ve been reading my newsletter, you know that one of my favorite AI tools for building a resume and cover letter is resumatic.
Features:
Writes resumes and cover letters
Scores your resume on how well it’s content and keyword targeting
Has a GPT-powered writer to develop great content for you
Gives you the option of getting your resume reviewed by a real resume writer
Gives you the ability to choose from several ATS friendly templates
Matches you with real jobs you’re qualified for.
I even wrote about it in one of the June issues of this newsletter. Read about it!
Job Applications
A few tools in this area to choose from.
Talentprise is a smart job finder that uses the information that’s on your resume/cover letter to build a profile and match you with jobs you’re qualified for.
After signing up, you complete a short assessment and set preferences around the types of jobs you’re looking for (i.e., remote, hybrid), who you’d like to be contacted by (i.e., in-house recruiters, agency recruiters), and can even exclude certain companies from contacting you.
As of this writing, it’s free to sign up and you only pay if you’re a recruiter, not a job seeker. Better get to it!
JobWizard is tool that helps you fill out job applications quickly. Other features include job application tracking, interview coaching, and salary analysis! It is on the pricier end at $99/month, but if your job search is suffering from a lack of time to fill out those tedious applications or just a lack of organization, it may be for you.
Career Planning
NAV is a unique tool in that helps you assess your current career path to make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck, so you don’t waste years in a job that may not pay off as you expected. It’s almost like a credit score for you current career and even future career prospects.
Interview Prep
If you’re someone that struggles during the job interview, you may want to check this new tool out. It uses AI to come up with interview questions that apply to your specific industry, profession, and seniority level.
Did you know that landing a job at Blackstone, a trillion-dollar private equity firm, is harder than getting into Harvard?
Blackstone Group is a leading global investment firm, established in 1985, that specializes in various financial services. One of its key business areas is private equity, where they raise funds from investors to buy stakes in companies, often gaining majority ownership. As of 2023, it's one of the largest firms of its kind, managing billions of dollars. It’s also really hard to get a job there, according to founder and CEO, Steve Schwarzman.
To give you an idea of just how hard it is, they’ve received 62,000 job applications in 2023, and only hired 169 of them. For you math folks, those are 0.3% odds! By comparison, Harvard’s acceptance rate is 3.3%.
BusinessInsider spoke to their current President, John Gray as well as headhunters that actively recruit for the company. They tell applicants to be ready for the tough questions, because there’s no shortage of them during the interview stage (if you’re lucky enough to get picked for one that is).
They look for people who are more entrepreneurial, are generally more read and have more of a breadth of opinions…and even at an earlier stage demonstrate that they have some leadership capacity.
Charlie Kershaw, Partner at Dore Partnership, a recruiting firm that does hiring for Blackstone, indicated that some of the questions that often come up during interviews include:
Describe ways in which you've demonstrated entrepreneurial acumen.
Describe times in your life where you've faced major challenges and overcome them.
Describe times where you've challenged the status quo or challenged opinions.
Gray said that a critical character trait they look for in all their applicants, junior and senior, is the ability to be team players.
Most of all though, applicants had to demonstrate that they’ve done their homework on the company and its top investments. Senior applicants would even be asked to assess previous deals and provide feedback on what they would’ve done differently.
